The best places to catch a wave in Australia are just a few days away, but it’s always a good idea to read the latest forecasts ahead of time.
If you can’t be in the water, there are some things to keep in mind when surfboarders are on the lookout for the next wave.
Here’s a look at the current state of the Australian wave forecast:1.
What’s happening in the surf:A few months ago, Australian surfboarder Chris Stahl told surfboard.com.au he was not sure if a wave would hit before March.
But today, he’s not worried.
He’s got a plan.
“We’re just going to sit back and watch the waves happen and try and make sure we’re not going to get too caught up in the chaos that’s going on in the world,” he said.
“We want to make sure that the wave doesn’t hit before the weather stops.”2.
How big is a wave?
“A wave is a thing of beauty, it’s really, really big,” Mr Stahl said.
“If you’re surfing in the morning and it’s just an average wave, it could be pretty big.”
A wave can reach 40m at peak times, but that’s usually at the end of a long wave, with no wave breaks.3.
What happens when a wave hits?
If the wave is on the move, it will likely move at a rate of up to 60m/second, and that will hit you on the backside of your head.4.
Where to stay safe?
If you have to ride on the beach, stay out of the surf zone, and only ride in the direction of waves that are moving at least 20m/sec, Surfers Bulletin surfing instructor Tom Sowers said it’s not a good time to ride in waves.
“A lot of people have ridden a wave and then ridden into the surf to try and get away, and I’ve had that happen quite a few times,” he told surfboards.comau.
“There’s always going to be someone that’s not looking out for you, or riding into the wave.”5.
How do you surf without goggles?
If surfing in a surf zone is a risk, there is no better option than goggles.
“It’s pretty hard to get the waves out of your face without goggles, and goggles are a bit of a luxury item,” Surfers Bully instructor Chris Tompkins told surfscontent.com.
“So it’s a bit tricky to get into the water without goggles.
But you’re always going be able to see, especially with goggles on.”

If you’re looking at a big wave on the horizon, there’s a good chance it will be on a reef or a small beach.
“I’ve heard from people that say the wave that is on their horizon has been on the reef and the wave they were surfing on was on the small beach,” Mr Sowers told surfcards.com, adding, “I guess they’re just taking it as a guess.”6.
When is the next Australian wave going to hit?
If a wave does hit in the next few days, it may be as far away as mid-March.
The Australian Department of Water and Environment says there’s currently no wave activity in the Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria or South Australia.
However, if a big one does come to Australia, it won’t be long before it hits.
