In an effort to expand the beach’s capacity, a group of surfers has set up a new surf hut for surfers.
The Honolulu News Now reports that Waikiri Surf Hut, a nonprofit organization that provides a temporary lodging and food program to surfers, opened up a small surf shop at the Waikīkī Visitor Center on Saturday.
“I was thrilled to see that they were willing to take on this challenge,” Waikiter Joe C. Alakai, a member of Waikii Beach Surfers, told the newspaper.
“It’s been a long time coming.
The only way to make it happen is by doing it ourselves.”
The Waikilas beach, known as the Hawaiian Islands, has the second largest surfing population in the United States.
The surf hut is open to the public from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., but the Waikele, who live along the east side of the beach, can use it only during the weekend.
